Fragrant, aromatic and medicinal plants (FAMPs) play an important role in many fields, including food, cosmetics, herbal medicine and traditional medicine.

The succession of crises we have experienced in recent years had led us to hope that we could eventually return to a certain degree of stability. But we now have to accept that we are living in a world that is inherently volatile. Health, geopolitical and climate crises are following one another continuously, like pearls on a necklace. We need to adapt our practices to this new reality. We are moving from managing the average to managing the standard deviation!

How can a single tree produce three aromatic extracts… with such different properties? We often imagine that a plant produces only one essential oil. Yet the bitter orange tree (Citrus aurantium) shows us that, in reality, the same plant can provide several aromatic extracts with very different properties…

A hydrosol is obtained after the distillation of a natural raw material; it is the residual water remaining once the essential oil has been separated. Rich in aromatic compounds, it is much less concentrated in active constituents (between 0.02% and 0.20%) than essential oils.
