« Last spring, we spoke about the uncertainties and instabilities affecting our activities. The 2025 campaign has been once again marked by these issues. Uncertainty and instability have now become our main day-to-day working parameters, across commercial, logistical, climatic, and regulatory domains.

The summer’s weather conditions negatively impacted harvests in France, with two episodes of severe drought. Biomass yields were low, oil content in plants was poor, and the production of dried plants was disappointing.

In addition to climatic hazards, analytical risks now threaten the compliance of dried-plant harvests and further complicate the securing of supply chains. In this challenging environment, Elixens works closely with its growers and suppliers to anticipate the consequences of these factors as much as possible.

Regarding the integration of the Vaison-la-Romaine site, the expected synergies are materializing and benefiting both former Herbissima clients and Elixens France’s longstanding customers.

To react quickly and appropriately, you need reliable information. In this new issue of From the fields in Dauphiné-Provence, we share the information we have that we feel is relevant to your short- and medium-term purchasing decisions.

The Elixens teams (in France, the United States and the United Kingdom) are at your side to talk about it."

General background

Weather review

Weather remains a decisive factor for our productions, directly influencing the quality and yield of the harvests.
Unfortunately, increasingly frequent climatic events have affected the past campaign.
Here is a look back at recent months and a sharing of future forecasts for our production area  (Drôme, Gard, Alpes-de-Hautes-Provence).

After a wet winter that helped replenish groundwater reserves, Spring began with a mild and rainy April, keeping the soil’s available water at an optimal level. Crops developed early, and we began distilling thyme in mid-May, nearly 10 days earlier than last year.

However, June, particularly hot (+2.8 °C above seasonal averages) marked a turning point. This excessive heat, combined with a lack of water, caused significant stress on the plants: premature flowering, slowed growth, and reduced biomass. Harvests were moved forward, and production volumes declined.

Yields varied greatly depending on the species and geographic areas. This situation led to a concentration of distillation periods, with several crops needing to be distilled at the same time. Efforts were particularly focused on helichrysum and Roman chamomile. At the same time, most of our partner growers from SICA Bio Plantes distilled their lavender.

A very significant drop in production was observed for Roman chamomile, for example. For lavender, yields were more variable, ranging from a 50% decrease to near-normal volumes depending on the region.

Severe storms, sometimes accompanied by hail, also caused major damage to certain plots, especially clary sage, just before harvest. With reduced volumes and concentrated harvest, the distillation campaign was particularly intense and shorter than in previous years.

August was marked by a heatwave and very little rainfall.

Many crops already harvested, such as mint, lemon balm, and thyme, struggled to resume growth. They had to wait until rainfall returned in September before growing up again. As a result, the final cuts were low, and the 2025 harvest campaign shows a decrease in total production volumes.

With the arrival of Autumn, producers from SICA Bio Plantes and Elixens France meet to review the past year and exchange experiences. These meetings are an opportunity to identify areas for improvement in cultivation practices and to adjust production acreage based on market needs and future outlooks.

Elixens France’s distillery, meanwhile, remains very active throughout the Autumn. After geranium, the final cuts of mint enter distillation, followed by conifers such as cedar and cypress. At the same time, the distillery also continues producing floral waters from this year’s dried plants, including cornflower, common mallow, and calendula.

Lavender and lavandin market

LAVENDER

Prices are rising again, a direct consequence of lower production yields, likely linked to climate warming. Despite this trend, some opportunistic low-price destocking can still be observed.

Fine lavender (including the Carla and Rapido varieties) shows more significant yield losses than clonal lavender (such as Maillette, Diva, Matheronne, Vista). As a result, part of the demand is expected to shift toward clonal varieties.

Both types of lavender are therefore affected by a gradual increase in prices, while stocks from previous years are beginning to run out. For now, these price increases remain moderate.

In Bulgaria, prices are also rising, although they remain well below French origins. Harvest volumes are decreasing due to price levels still considered unsatisfactory by producers.

LAVANDIN

The market is shifting. Cultivated areas have decreased sharply in recent years, leading to a significant drop in harvested volumes (–30% to –40% compared with last year). At the same time, consumption is beginning to rise slightly again. « Distress sales » (sell-at-any-price practices seen last year) have become less frequent. However, many producers remain in a difficult position, still holding substantial stocks.

Harvest volumes are clearly down, and part of the market supply has been covered through initial destocking. It is estimated that around 20% of current supplies come from previous years’ harvests.

Stock concentration has increased among certain operators who continue to accumulate significant volumes. The CIHEF is encouraging producers to replant, but limited cash flow is slowing initiatives. It is also worth noting that the organic lavandin Grosso market is particularly saturated, as many producers converted to organic in hopes of achieving higher value.

Prices are rising but have not yet returned to market-equilibrium levels. Once existing stocks are absorbed, the market is expected to experience a prolonged period of tightness, likely leading to a sharp upward correction in prices. In this context, Elixens France believes that a window has opened to implement medium-term contractual solutions that include a structured price-setting framework. The purpose of these agreements is to offer clients a balanced and responsible partnership, while anticipating upcoming imbalances in the lavandin market.

Linden market and harvest

The linden market is currently experiencing a particularly tense period, reflecting a broader phenomenon affecting several herbs used in herbal medicine. Securing fully compliant batches (regarding pesticides and alkaloids) is becoming increasingly difficult, even when harvests are conducted in the wild and under controlled conditions.

Analyses sometimes reveal non-compliances, particularly in organic batches, with the unexpected presence of pesticide residues, even when the source of contamination cannot be clearly identified within such a complex ecosystem. This situation causes delivery delays, shortages, and sometimes a total lack of material in certain sectors. Common linden and silver linden are particularly affected, and shortages are likely to persist until the next harvest and the availability of satisfactory batches.

This tension impacts all market actors, including producers, who face batch rejections, even for plants harvested individually, despite the quality of their work and their lack of responsibility for these environmental issues.

Orange market

The orange market has eased slightly following the latest harvest in Brazil, the world’s largest producer, which turned out somewhat better than expected. Nevertheless, the situation remains tense due to the combined effects of greening and climate disruptions, which continue to impact yields and harvest quality. All derivatives are affected: essential oils, terpenes, and concentrated fractions (10x, 5x…).

In this uncertain context, Elixens France is taking measures to help mitigate the impact of these issues for you, including maintaining higher safety stocks, securing production well in advance, and sometimes even from planting stage. We have also been working for several weeks on this winter’s plantations to cover our needs through 2027 for most plants. It is a challenging exercise, but our expertise allows us to develop the best possible management plan.

We strongly recommend anticipating your needs by contacting your Elixens France sales representative to secure your volumes and pricing conditions.

Quality overview and Certification status

DEKRA Seal IFS Food.jpglogo-dekra-iso-22000.png 2025 Audits: Strong results amid a period of transition

The year 2025 was marked by a significant number of certification audits and official inspections across our production sites. Among them, AB/Bio, COSMOS, FiABLE, and ISO 22000 certifications were successfully completed at our Eurre site, while the Vaison-la-Romaine site passed an unannounced IFS audit conducted by a new certification body with strengthened requirements fully aligned with the standard’s expectations.

These results are particularly encouraging, especially as they come during the merger and reorganization of our two entities. This transition involved numerous evaluations, all concluded satisfactorily, demonstrating our ability to maintain the highest quality standards.

In total, nine client audits were conducted in 2025, confirming the robustness of our quality commitments in meeting partner expectations. In addition, several action plans are currently being implemented, and two further audits are scheduled before the end of 2025. Finally, our internal audit system continues to play a central role in quality management and continuous improvement. This busy year once again demonstrates the strong commitment of our teams and our ongoing dedication to compliance, excellence, and transparency.
